I am Irene Diaz. My husband and I rescued Iris about a year ago. We were so incredibly happy to hear that she was adopted by your family. Iris has truly come full circle and thanks to you she now has a happy ending after a long challenging year.

Where did we get Iris? My husband and I wanted to check and make sure that the dogs that were impounded by our local barangay were well taken care of. Last June 2008, we found Iris with one of her puppies sharing a cage with two adult dogs in the backyard of the barangay office. She was abandoned with her puppies by her owner. I was told by the staff that the other puppies were taken by other concerned individuals.

I was immediately convinced that I needed to take the puppy home as he was already injured due to dog bites from the other adult dogs. Iris’s son “Liefste” recovered and is now our one year old dog.

When we saw Iris for the first time, she was only skin and bones and I promised her and the other two dogs that I would come back for them. We visited often to donate dog food and separate cages for the dogs.

After the necessary arrangements, Iris arrived at PARC last June 2008. She was also the first dog at the shelter that received heartworm therapy and successfully recovered during her stay at PARC. She also did really well during her dog behavior classes.

I cannot look at our dog “Liefste” without thinking of Iris. I am excited to hear how she is doing with her new family. Most of all thank you for giving her a home. Iris is a very special dog, just like all other dogs. Thanks also to PAWS, especially Anna and Liza.

Dear Irene

Thank you for spending time and asking aboutIRIS. She is doing well adjusting to our home. My four sons are happy to have her with us. They are having a grand time playing with her and taking turns in walking iris around our village. This is the first time they have a pet and we are glad it is Iris.

Iris is a very bright dog and likes to be cuddled and rub always. She is mostly obedient to my wife maybe she felt that it was my wife who chose her from the many dogs in PAWS. She always followed her even in going to the market. She is also a good guard dog giving us a sense of security in our home. My wife and I are happy to have her. I am glad we decided to adopt her, coz she brings joy in our family. Come to think of it, i have 4 sons and no daughter. My wife is the only female in our home, and now we have Iris as the the other girl :).

We still don't have a picture of Iris but will be having it soon. I will be sending it to you ASAP as soon as we got one.

Again thanks for this email. It gives us warmth in our heart knowing many people do love IRIS. As you requested, we have given Iris a hug for you, not only once, but tons of it.

PAWS ANIMAL BLESSINGS

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society is mounting a series of PET BLESSINGS to celebrate the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals.

It will kick-off in the morning of October 4 with a private affair at the PAWS
Shelter where the animals currently being cared for and rehabilitated by PAWS
will be blessed (10.30am)

The other two blessings are for the public and will be held within a special
Mass for the Animals at the Bonifacio High Street at 6pm on October 4 (Sat) and at Eastwood Central Plaza at 5pm on October 5 (Sun).

The Bonifacio High Street Pet Blessing sponsored by ALPO will be highlighted by
a Candlelighting Ceremony and the renewal of pet owners’ commitment to their
companion animals. This activity is part of PAWS’ participation in World
Animal Day which also falls on October 4th.

On the other hand, guardians & their pets attending the Eastwood City Mass
for the Animals will get a chance to join in the procession of a life-sized
statue of St. Francis around the venue.

Offerings and collection will be done by PAWS' Dr. Dogs while music will be
provided by the 92AD Choir.

What: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PROTEST AGAINST THE JAPANESE DOLPHIN SLAUGHTER

The dolphin drive in Taiji, Japan, is the largest slaughter of dolphins in the world - about 2300 dolphins per year, which is more than 3 times the amount of whales killed in the Antarctic. About 23,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed throughout Japan every year, and all of the meat tested so far has toxic levels of mercury.

During the drive hunts, the dolphins are killed in a secret cove hidden away in a National Park in the Wakayama prefecture, a few hours from Osaka and Kyoto. The cove is covered with tarps and nets, and access is blocked by steel gates, barbed wire, razor ribbon and guards. The government is trying to keep the yearly blood bath a secret but that is getting harder to do because of all the attention this issue has been receiving. Even scientific experts and all major zoo associations have denounced such a practice as unsustainable and inhumane

This year, more than 54 organizations in 34 cities will protest the start of the annual dolphin hunts. In the Philippines, Earth Island Institute (EII) and the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) will lead the protests in Manila against the largest slaughter of dolphins in the world. Photo opportunities will be available during the protest.

Japan Dolphin Day Info: The Marine Park Connection

Mr. Magdaraog, an official of Ocean Adventure Marine Park in Subic has stated during a meeting of Committee on Animal Welfare (CAW) that the marine mammals in their facility "came from Japan".

Please read the full information below which will tell you why you should think twice before patronizing marine parks. Why marine parks "saving dolphins from the Japanese fisheries" is one big LIE.

Fact: Marine parks create a demand for the killing of dolphins.

What Is a Drive Fishery?

Fishermen take out several small motorized boats to locate a pod of bottlenose dolphins, Risso's dolphins, or false killer whales (and possibly such other species as pilot whales). Once the fishermen locate a pod, they begin herding the animals toward shore, using the noise of the boats' engines and the banging of pipes underwater. There are some reports that they also use underwater explosives.

The fishermen will then either drive the animals right onto the shore or trap them in a bay. Either way, shallow water is necessary, because fishermen slaughter the dolphins by getting into the water and moving through the pod, stabbing animals to death. The fishermen may set some live animals aside for marine parks and remove them from the water using slings or stretchers. Animals destined for slaughter may be hauled out onto land with cranes, often still alive. The cruelty is enormous.

The Marine Park Connection

In the late 1980s, marine parks and aquariums (including U.S. parks and the U.S. Navy) began purchasing live animals, paying many thousands of dollars for each animal. This made hunts profitable again. Although the number of animals killed each year has not returned to the high levels of the past, dozens and sometimes hundreds of dolphins and small whales die annually. (The government sets quotas for each region and species that are frequently violated).

At one time dolphins from drive hunts were imported into the United States. Before 1993, all the dolphins and small whales (such as false killer whales) imported into the United States from Japan were almost certainly captured in drive hunts. In 1993, a California marine park sought to import several false killer whales from Japan, and the same videographer who originally exposed the drives in the 1980s revealed how the animals were captured. The U.S. government had stipulated that the dolphins could only be imported if they had been captured "humanely" by purse-seine net (while less cruel than a drive, net captures are still traumatic). Because the manner of capture violated the conditions of the permit, the government prohibited the import. Since then, no whales or dolphins have been imported into the United States from Japan.

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums recently condemned the cruelty of the drive hunts. Going a step further, WAZA, which represents approximately 12,000 zoological facilities around the world, and the Alliance, which represents approximately 45 marine mammal facilities, have specifically urged their members not to acquire dolphins from these hunts, as such acquisition violates the code of ethics or sustainability standards for these associations. The AZA is the last holdout and should follow suit.

A woman called the PAWS office to ask if she can bring some kittens she found to our shelter.

This woman has very kindly already adopted 8 of the cats she has rescued, and has 3 dogs too. She is also feeding a feral colony (yes, she TNR's :) ). Her resources already stretched, she cannot take in 4 more kittens.

Kittens as young as these don't usually thrive well in shelters, so we advised her to hang on to them a little bit longer so we can try re-homing them online first. We wish that the kittens would go directly from her home to adopters' homes.

Please help this woman (who has already helped so many animals) and these kittens by forwarding this to family or friends who might be interested in welcoming a kitten (or two) into their home.

If you are ready to take in a new furry family member, please consider adopting one of these little kittens!

Evel has a great big smile on his handsome, open face. His eyes are a startling yellow, and they sparkle when he’s happy. His perky ears closely resemble those of a German shepherd—and yes, he will let you stroke them. His light tan hair is thick for an aspin, and very soft. He is healthy, has straight legs, a good back, and a playfully coiled tail. He is missing a few teeth, but that does little to dim the smile of this confident dog.

Evel is a six-year-old male dog who was left at PARC by his human family last November, before they emigrated. Since then, he’s been quietly on the lookout for a new human to keep company. He gets along well with the other dogs, but will not let himself be bullied. After I took him for a walk, he went back to his quarters. The other dogs crowded around him like a flock of paparazzi, but he simply held his head high and walked on.

Evel is a wonderful companion dog who likes to be close to his human alpha. He will let you hold him, hug him, and stroke him for very long periods. That’s why people, and even kids, should know how to treat him gently, but with firmness when needed. On the leash, he is light and obedient, even refraining from chasing cats—but you know he’s on the other end. After the first rush that comes with the beginning of every walk, he’ll stay alongside you, sniffing and marking anything taller than eight inches. After the walk, he’s content to sit quietly beside you as you watch the world go by. But Evel is also watchful and alert; he’s a sentinel ready to inform you of approaching life forms. He won’t threaten them; he’ll just bark a few times to give you a heads-up.

Evel is happiest when he’s with his humans. Won’t you give him a chance to take care of you, even as you take care of him?

Thank you for your interest in adopting. By simply reading this website, you are already showing the animals of PAWS that you care. The animals of PAWS are internet savvy and are monitoring this website's traffic constantly. Tails are twitching and wagging with joy right at this moment.

If you really are serious about adopting a homeless animal from PAWS, here are what you need to do:

1. Download the PAWS Adoption Form and fill it up. Once filled up, you can fax it to (02)4751688. You can also bring the filled up form personally to the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center (PARC). A map of PARC's location can be found here. If you need more information on how to get there, just email me (find.home @ yahoo.co.uk) and I'll be glad to help. I live just a hundred steps from PARC and I may be able to give very very very good instructions.

2. Schedule an actual trip to PARC for the adoption interview by calling (02)4751688. This may coincide with step 1 and/or step 3. The interview will simply tell us how you are as an animal owner/guardian and what type of animal companion would fit you and your home.

3. Schedule an actual trip to PARC to meet an adoptable homeless animal. Choose the cat or the dog, kitten or puppy, that would complement you and your home. With a little patience and a lot of fun, I'm 100% sure you will find one!

4. Pay the adoption fee. That's Php300 for cats and Php1,000 for dogs. Before being adopted out, the animals of PAWS are neutered/spayed, vaccinated against rabies, groomed and dewormed, and provided with some sample pet food from Pedigree. After being adopted out, the animals may be brought back to the shelter to get free basic obedience training and avail of free veterinary consultations and discounts on PARC clinic services (all by appointment). The fee would simply go into ensuring that the adoption and animal rehabilitation programs of PAWS keep rolling like a happy puppy playing in the green pasture on a saturday afternoon!

5. Take your new companion home and go online to join the official PAWS yahoogroup and occasionally tell us what's up. We'd love to hear how you are doing with your new animal companion. Share pictures!
