NO TO SOPA

Hi there visitors,it's been a longtime since I posted something this blog and I feel a bit awkward posting about this,why? because I've took a long AFK break and a comeback post about SOPA would be a bit harsh but let's admit it,we all love free info,and with SOPA,we can't have informations,inspirations,ideas,entertainment,etc that we are used to,and just..just imagine this..a world without free knowledge,I know we could get knowledge aside from our computers,but hey,it would might slow down us,to others,maybe a bit,and some professions might suffer from this,like designers or artists who love looking for inspirations or references from the net. Surfing the net for just an hour or two could lessen a persons daily acquired knowledge and freedom of expression whatever or whoever the topic may be. It also feeds our curiosity in many things,our hunger for more information and knowledge. That's all I wanted to say. Really just wanted to express my feelings and thoughts about this,how about you?

PARC announcement on holidays

The PAWS Animal Shelter (PARC) is closed today, September 21 - a declared holiday.

We are closed on holidays to give our staff members some much-needed rest. *Most of them are at the shelter up to 9 or 10pm everyday - attending to rescues, medicating the animals, doing dog rehab and training.

Pet Health Alert: Cancer Prevention in Older Dogs

Dogs can have cancer too..

Cancer is not only a risk for human beings—it can affect our canine companions, too. "Veterinary research estimates that the incidence of cancer in older dogs ranges from 50 to 75 percent," according to Dr. Louise Murray, ASPCA Director of Medicine at Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital (BMAH).

Such high numbers of the disease may have to do with innovations in pet health care, such as vaccines and deworming. “Nowadays, more pets are protected from parasites, heartworms and viral disease,” observes Dr. Murray. “As a result, they are living longer and developing cancer in their old age.”

Veterinary oncologists are also detecting cancer more often and at earlier stages with the help of sophisticated diagnostic tools such as ultrasound, CT scans and even MRIs for pets.

Though we cannot prevent all cancers, there are certain steps pet parents can take to greatly diminish the chances of their animal companion contracting the disease:

• Spaying and neutering pets before their first heat cycles can significantly reduce the occurrence of mammary tumors and helps prevent ovarian, uterine and testicular cancers.
• If you notice a mass on your pet's skin, have it examined immediately by a veterinarian. If it is cancerous, have it removed as soon as possible.
• Don't allow your pet to be exposed to cigarette smoke.
• Use pet-formulated sunscreen on vulnerable, fair-skinned pets.
• Avoid chemical lawn products, which are proven to cause cancers in pets, including bladder cancer and lymphoma.

Pet Poison Alert: Accidental Ingestion of Wood Glue on the Rise

Our country’s new-found thrift has lead many homeowners to save a penny by tackling do-it-yourself home improvement projects. But take care, pet parents—you may be exposing your furry friends to dangerous tools and tricks of the trade. Polyurethane glue, a water-resistant adhesive and favorite of woodworkers, is highly toxic if ingested by cats and dogs.

According to data from the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), pet poisonings from wood glues—and other adhesives containing the substance diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI)—are on the rise. In the past 12 months, the APCC handled more than 170 cases of pets who ingested expanding glues. Of those incidents, the majority involved dogs and were evaluated at high or medium risk for developing severe, life-threatening problems.

Polyurethane glue—also known by brand names like Gorilla Glue and Elmer’s Pro-Bond—is prized for its ability to bond to wood. If eaten, however, the glue expands in the stomach’s warm, moist environment and forms a softball-sized lump. A dog who eats even a small amount of MDI-based adhesive can experience severe gastrointestinal problems resulting in blockages and requiring emergency surgery to remove the mass.

Pet parents should treat any expanding adhesive as a potential hazard, since the offending chemical MDI is not always listed on product labels. Like all toxic household products, wood glue should be stored in a secure cabinet to prevent your furry beloveds from coming into contact with it. If you suspect your pet has ingested polyurethane glue, please call your vet or the ASPCA’s 24-hour poison hotline at (888) 426-4435. We should not allow cruel things happen to animals,for we are the caretakers of God's creation I pity people who does cruel things on creatures that doesn't have the power to overcome their predator.

Cruelty happens in Cebu - an observation of how the city's stray dogs are handled. AND THEY WANT A GREYHOUND RACING TRACK IN CEBU?? If we cannot ensure that all DOGS are treated humanely, how will putting up of a greyhound racetrack with almost 1,000 greyhounds help the problem of dog-over population, sufficient rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of our own ASPINS, humane education, etc.

At about 4:15 very early in the morning of last Friday, July 17, as I was bringing the wife and kid to the pier to take the first trip of the Supercat for an unplanned trip to Leyte, we passed by a most gut-wrenching sight along Happy Valley road in Cebu City.

Three men were dragging a stray dog they had caught with a length of wire. The poor dog was twisting and struggling in the air because the men had raised the wire so that its feet no longer touched the ground.

The entire length of the tongue of the dog was flailing outside its mouth but I doubt if the poor animal managed to make a sound because the noose was clearly drawn very tight and was eating into the hide around its neck, effectively strangling and depriving it of breath.

As the dog struggled vainly to break free, jets of shit and urine burst from its orifices and I did not know if its was from the physical struggle for life or from its sheer terror and emotional distress.

In the back of my car, my nine-year-old daughter was screaming at the sight, horrified by what the men were doing to the dog. I did not know if she was crying, but I can sense the terror and the trauma in her voice.

I hurriedly left the scene because I did not want my daughter to see any more of this godforsaken atrocity committed by those three grownup men. As I passed by their vehicle, I saw that it was a Multicab owned by the Cebu City government by the logo on yellow background.

I was not able to see the plate number of the vehicle, though, because of my haste in wanting to flee the scene of such horror. Finally I was able to see with my own eyes what I saw only in previously published newspaper photographs.

A few months back, a similar scene was caught by camera and published in the newspaper. Based on what I saw from the published photo, I wrote a piece objecting to the manner in which stray dogs were being caught, using pieces of steel wire.

I also recalled previously published stories about how dogs caught by the Cebu City pound were being disposed of in case their owners did not show up to claim them. The hapless dogs were gassed to death using toxic fumes from the exhaust pipes of motor vehicles.

An official of Cebu City whom I believe happens to be directly responsible for the city pound wrote a rejoinder completely denying everything I wrote at the time. I was aghast at the denial, as if photographs would lie.

But God works in mysterious ways and the truth will always come out. No very long after that official vehemently denied the cruel manner in which the city pound was carrying out its campaign against stray dogs, it was placed on the spot by foreign animal rights advocates.

The foreign animal rights advocates happened to be in Cebu City at the time and made their own observations and drew their own conclusions. Among its findings — the stray dogs were being caught and disposed of cruelly and not in accordance with proper standards.

The official who issued the strong denial was compelled to own the shortcomings and promised to reform and change its methods. That was several months ago. Judging from what I saw with my own eyes last Friday dawn, no changes were ever made.

I would like to invite any and all animal rights advocates to come and visit our city, which is also known as the Queen City of the South, and visit our city pound to see for themselves, talk to the people around, and draw their own conclusions.

Of course, it may be that by the time they arrive, some changes shall have been made, in which case it is all for the better. But they must come, because it appears local officials who even drive non-Cebu City patients out of the city hospital, couldn’t care less for dogs.

By the way, this piece is not intended as an opposition to the city ordinance on stray dogs nor as an effort to interfere with the work of the city pound. I am just complaining about the cruel way in which the city pound carries out its responsibilities.

Pup My Ride collaborative rescue effort saves more than 150 puppy mill dogs from certain death

When two puppy mill dogs Beatrice and Beauty arrived together at Best Friends’ temporary care center on a Midwestern farm, the pair hung out in their new kennel as if they were long-lost cousins, sleeping and resting against each other. But Beatrice, who had pyometra and a hernia—common afflictions in overbred females—was rushed to a local veterinary hospital for emergency surgery.

Best Friends’ volunteer caregivers, in the meantime, took Beauty under their wing, spending time with her in Beatrice’s absence. Beauty is missing most of her lower jaw, but because she’s able to eat and drink with no signs of discomfort, she’ll move on to foster care and then into a forever home.

Beatrice and Beauty are poster-dog examples of the throw-aways—the ones brokers and breeders can’t sell, the ones scheduled to die. “They’re the ‘scraps’ they can’t sell at auction that get killed afterward,” says rescuer Lisa, who requested that her last name not be used. “No one wants to buy them.”

More than 150 mostly overbred dogs, along with the left-over “scraps” of miscellaneous puppies and adults, are now on the first leg of their journey to new lives as companion animals, all because of Best Friends’ partnership program with rescuers to pull canines large and small, young and old, from puppy mills where they were about to be euthanized.

Dogs like Beatrice and Beauty suffer as breeding dogs, all so they can produce puppies who are eventually sold online and from pet stores. Consumers are led to believe that pet-store puppies come from nice environments, but this rarely—if ever— is the case, says Kelli Ohrtman, a specialist for Best Friends’ Puppies Aren’t Products campaign, which, through its Pup My Ride program, is rescuing puppy-mill canines on a continuing basis as part of Best Friends’ No More Homeless Pets mission.

Dogs like Beatrice, because of her looks and partially missing jaw, aren’t necessarily the type people are drawn to. But that doesn’t matter at Best Friends. “Even if the breeder didn’t feel that Beauty was perfect, we do,” Ohrtman says.

Another prime example of those rejected by breeders—recently saved from certain death through Pup My Ride— are a litter of 9-week-old cocker spaniel/poodle mix puppies.

Microchip project enables new life for farmed bear

An Asiatic black bear held illegally on a bear bile farm is on his way to a sanctuary today, thanks to a WSPA-funded microchipping and monitoring program.

In 2005, the Vietnamese government banned the extraction of bile from bears in farms and outlawed the trading of bile products, a major step towards closing this unnecessary industry for good.
