It's that time of the year, when you get to vote which fur hags (or fur ogres) will make it to PETA's annual "Worst-Dressed" List. This year, you will find most of the usual cold-hearted, tacky offenders, because any celebs who really matter just don't wear dead animal skins.
Celebrities have a powerful impact on the fashion industry and on their fans, who often emulate their style, so it's important that those who choose to wear fur learn once and for all that cruelty to animals is never in style. Since you may not get a chance to tell them how you feel in person, send the message that wearing animals skins and carrying accessories made from them is simply a fashion don't by voting for this year's "Worst-Dressed." As part of a larger initiative to reduce cruelty to animals, celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck recently announced that he will no longer serve foie gras in any of his 137 U.S. restaurants. But restaurants around the world—including many in Manila—continue to serve the gourmet cruelty. Please join PETA Asia-Pacific in urging restaurants to follow Puck's compassionate example by no longer serving foie gras.
Foie gras, French for "fatty liver," is made from the enlarged livers of male ducks and geese. Birds used for foie gras are kept in tiny wire cages or packed into sheds. Two or three times every day, up to 2 kilograms of grain and fat are pumped into the birds' stomachs through pipes that are shoved down their throats. This force-feeding causes the birds' livers to become diseased and swell to up to 10 times their normal size. Many birds become too sick to stand. The pipes sometimes puncture birds' throats, and the massive amount of food sometimes ruptures their stomachs and other internal organs. Female hatchlings, who are useless to foie gras farmers, are often drowned in scalding water, suffocated in plastic bags, or shredded alive in macerators.
It shouldn't happen to "man's best friend," but it does. Take a drive down many country roads and city streets, and you'll see them—dogs left to spend their entire lives in "solitary confinement," trapped at the end of a chain or in a small pen.
We can't think of a crueler punishment for these social pack animals, who want—and deserve—companionship, scratches behind the ears, walks around the block, and the opportunity to curl up at your feet at night.
Many communities across America and beyond have learned the hard way that chaining dogs is dangerous to the public, especially to children. Chaining dogs—also called "tethering"—is a safety hazard for both dogs and communities.
January is "Unchain a Dog" month, and we hope that you'll use this opportunity to share tips with people in your community to help improve the lives of dogs. Fill out this form to receive PETA's "Unchain a Dog" leafleting pack, which includes leaflets, stickers, and a small poster.

A good and a bad news from Peta.
Thanks to the hard work of peta2's staff, members, Street Teamers, and volunteers and after we exposed her cruel use of fur online, Donna Karan has announced that all her Fall 2009 lines will be fur-free and that she has "no plans" to use fur in the future. Well done, everyone!
Karan's turnaround came days after peta2 launched our online campaign and after Tim Gunn Project Runway's mega–fashion guru, sent Karan and designer Giorgio Armani a video that he narrated for peta2 showing animals skinned alive for their fur and urged them to open their eyes to the violent and bloody fur industry.
Let's keep going strong too. While Donna Karan has followed in the footsteps of top designers—including Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein—Armani still refuses to stop using fur. Armani claims that he "only" uses fur from rabbits who are butchered for meat.
Although people who give animals as gifts invariably have good intentions, it is unfair to give an animal to anyone unless you are absolutely certain that the person wants that particular animal as a companion and is willing and able to give the animal a lifetime of proper care.
Animal shelters are filled beyond capacity with homeless animals, many of whom were former “pets” who, for one reason or another, didn’t fit into someone’s lifestyle. Sadly, many people end up turning animals they received as gifts over to an overburdened humane society or animal-control agency that is likely already filled to capacity.
If a family does decide to adopt an animal, every member of the family should go to the local animal shelter together to choose the animal, having already discussed the obligations and long-term commitments involved.
So this year, why not give the gift of a virtual “pet” instead? Try giving a plush Webkinz toy. Each plush toy comes with a code that lets you adopt your “pet” in a Webkinz world. You could also get a virtual “pet” video game for your Nintendo gaming system of choice or other gaming platform.

Armani now sells fur, including rabbit-fur coats for babies and children. The new designs mean he has broken the promise he made just last year when he said, "I spoke with the people from PETA, and they showed me some materials that convinced me not to use fur."

When PETA learned that real chimpanzees would play the part of Chim Chim in the Wachowski brothers' live-action movie adaptation of the classic television series Speed Racer, we immediately wrote to the Wachowskis and Warner Bros. urging them to use computer-generated imagery (CGI) or animatronics instead. Why? Chimpanzee "actors" are forcibly removed from their mothers when they are just infants—sometimes when they are only days old—causing lifelong emotional scars and an unshakable fear of the unknown. Trainers want these curious and playful animals to know that they're the boss, so the animals are often subjected to repeated beatings—a practice that the industry accurately refers to as "breaking the spirit."
The Wachowskis and Warner Bros. ignored PETA's pleas, and one chimpanzee allegedly felt the sting of their indifference. A whistleblower reported that the chimpanzee was severely beaten, and PETA confirmed the source's report that a chimpanzee also bit a young actor on the set.
