National Mill Dog Rescue’s Strader reflects back on the May 9 Pup My Ride rescue operation.

By Cathy Scott, Best Friends staff writer

“Hopefully, next time … ,” were the words, through tears, of Theresa Strader, founder of National Mill Dog Rescue, after a commerical breeder wouldn’t hand over a female dachshund living inside a barrel in the snow. “It kills me to leave her like this.” The mill operator wanted to breed the dog because of her unusual marble-like coloring.

That was last January. On May 9, when Strader partnered with Best Friends Animal Society to rescue and transport more than 200 dogs from mills, Strader headed straight for the small dirt area where the 2-year-old doxie had been living outdoors. “It broke Theresa’s heart to leave that dog,” volunteer Darrell Rhodes says. “But she got her this time.”

The dachshund, now named Kenzie, has already been placed in a home by Strader’s group, which is based in Colorado.

(Kenzie was lucky this time around)

And that, Strader says, is the goal for each and every one of the dogs pulled from mills, including those from the joint Pup My Ride operation. Until that goal is reached, the dogs Strader took back to her Colorado rescue center will continue getting all the care they need until they’re ready. “Then we’ll be in search for that perfect home,” she says.
