Yasmien Kurdi: Actor, Singer, and Champion for Animals

Yasmien Kurdi: Actor, Singer, and Champion for Animals

I just want people to realize that chickens, cows, and pigs are smart, interesting individuals every bit as deserving of our compassion as dogs or cats.

—Yasmien Kurdi

Filipino actor Yasmien Kurdi has added another role to her repertoire—avid animal protector. The talented actor and singer—whose second album, All I Need Is Love, was released last year—recently climbed into a cage to call attention to cruelty in the meat industry. The result is a series of two ads that beckon anyone with a heart to "relate to who is on your plate" and "respect chicks"—particularly the feathered kind who are killed by the billions every year and end up in sandwiches or on barbecues.

"Through PETA, I am able to speak up for animals and help them be heard. That's why I jumped at the chance to climb into a cage and urge people to 'liberate' their diet and give vegetarianism a try," Kurdi explained.

Kurdi, a vegetarian who was the runner up on the inaugural season of StarStruck, played the role of Charming in the 2006 hit TV series Bakekang. She currently stars as Shayne on GMA's hit dramarama Saan Darating Ang Umaga, and she hopes that her fans will be charmed by her heartfelt plea to treat animals with compassion and to keep them off the menu.

The 19-year-old actor, who has been appearing on TV as far back as 1999, explains the motivation behind her appeal in behalf of animals:

Once you go to [PETA US'] Web site GoVeg.com and watch videos of chickens living in intensive confinement, pigs raised in sow stalls, and cows having their throats slit while they are still alive, it's clear to see that eating meat, dairy products, and eggs supports abuse and involves victims who have no choice.

When you choose a vegetarian diet, animals aren't the only ones who benefit. A plant-based diet drastically decreases your chances of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, and many other diseases.

peta asia pacific's monthly volunteer night tom

for those who'd want to volunteer for peta asia pacific. :)

PETA's monthly Volunteer Night will be this Wednesday, December 3. Please join us for a fun-filled, dynamic night. We'd love to see you there!

Volunteer Night is a great chance to meet with other activists, and we also get loads of work done—from stuffing envelopes and writing letters to doing research online and making phone calls. Last month, we stuffed hundreds of envelopes with "Vegetarian Starter Kits," which PETA mails out for free to people who are interested in making the switch to a more compassionate diet.

Our office is located at Unit 503, Ferros Building , 176 Salcedo Street , Makati . We're just a stone's throw away from Makati Med.

Please feel free to e-mail Rochelle at RochelleR@PETAAsiaPacific.com or to SMS her on 0920-497-4679 if you have any questions about Volunteer Night. You can also contact us on 02-817-5292 or 818-3668 during office hours.

Everyone is welcome! Volunteer Night starts at 6 p.m., and it would be great if you could stick around for about three hours.

Thank you for everything that you do for animals. We hope to see you on Wednesday!

Best regards,

Ashley, Charlie, Chris, Jane, Jason, Jaya, Katrina, Maria, Min-Hee, and Rochelle

Alicia Mayer Challenges Men to 'Get It Up'

Whether posing in plastic wrap that says, "No one wants to be treated like a piece of meat," or holding a limp banana next to the tagline "Eating Meat Got You Down? Get It Up. Go Vegetarian," Filipina Alicia Mayer has got what it takes: compassion for animals.

"I want to be able to help stop animal cruelty," says the supermodel, FHM cover girl, and star of Eat Bulaga and Muli. She believes that the easiest way to do that is to go vegetarian. "With so many delicious alternatives now available, it's easier than ever to enjoy great food without causing animal suffering," she says.

When not busy with her acting career, Alicia devotes herself to promoting vegetarianism and combating animal abuse. Alicia has dressed in a bikini made of lettuce leaves for a PETA pro-vegetarian ad, she was a finalist in PETA's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity contest, and she signed a petition opposing foie gras.

Now she's making butchers and other meat-eaters squirm with her new ad, in which she appears in the cold stainless-steel setting of a butcher shop amid meat hooks. With this ad, Alicia hopes to urge people to relate to who is on their plate.

Her next new PETA ad points out the relationship between meat-eating and impotence and is sure to make more than one man think twice about his meat addiction. After all, nobody but a chimpanzee wants a limp banana.
