NOTE FROM PAWS:
In the Philippines, euthanasia / putting a dog to sleep / injecting a drug
called sodium pentobarbital so that unwanted animals 'fall asleep'
and never wake up, is virtually unheard of.
The most common ways of getting rid of unwanted pets is to set them free
on the streets (where they end up as roadkill or victims of cruelty)
or to give dogs to neighborhood drunkards for "pulutan" (bar chow/side dish).
The euthanasia drug for animals is not yet registered with the PDEA and is
therefore available only on the black market.
Hence, even a "respectable" and "peaceful" death may not be available
for many unwanted animals in our country.
PAWS is working on the registration of the euthanasia drug, as well as
the registration of drugs needed for spay-neuter operations. Our clinic
has sterilized 296 animals last year and 91 animals so far for 2008. Our Humane
Education Team continues to make its rounds in universities and schools
to increase awareness about these issues.
Each of the 2,198 PARC callers and the roughly 400 students who did
community service for the PAWS shelter last year were informed
about spay-neuter.
Help us and please do your share:
Spay or neuter your pets, and the strays that you feed.
Ask your veterinarian or call the PAWS Low-Cost Spay-Neuter Clinic
(Tues to Fridays, 10 am to 5pm) tel 475-1688.
Thank you.
