Help Animals - No matter how pressed for time you are
We know you're busy with homework and life ... but you also love animals. Who doesn't? There's just something about those beautiful eyes that pull at our heart strings... So no matter how much time you have on your hands (or don't have), you can do something to stop animal cruelty!
Only have a minute?
There's still lots you can do!
- Sign up for Animal Advocacy Alerts on the ASPCA website and they'll send you a text message whenever urgent action is required on pending humane legislation. So you can pick and choose what you can do depending on your availability or tell one of your animal lover friends so they can, well, do something.
- Sign up for Pet Care Alerts from the ASPCA. Choose Dog Care Tips or Cat Care Tips. Each week, you’ll receive tips from ASPCA experts on pet poison prevention, health care, foods to avoid and fun pet facts. If you don't own a pet, you probably know people who do so you'll have plenty opportunity to share the knowledge.
- Send a free e-card to help support the cause to stop animal cruelty. You'll make someone smile and spread the love ... and it's free!
- Sign a pledge to stop Animal Cruelty, then forward it on to your friends and family.
- Remember that video that circulated the web showing a grinning US Marine hurliing a yelping puppy off a cliff? Well, chances are he's not going to be punished. Why? Because the Uniform Code of Military Justice does not list cruelty to companion animals as an offense —it only mentions government-owned animals or wildlife. Doesn't that just make your blood boil? Well, do something about it! Write to the military and demand the code be changed!
Have an hour?
- Lobby for Animals! The ASPCA has all sorts of opportunities for you to write to your local decisionmaker to change or create a law to protect animals. For example, right now there's a movement to pass the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act which will stop horses from being sent overseas to be killed inhumanely for their meat. Just fill out an easy form to customize your letter, press send and presto, you're done!
- You a pet owner? Then you know there's tons of supplies you need to take care of your partner in crime. Why not order your supplies online (it's easier that way anyway) and stop animal cruelty at the same time? Go to Only Natural Pet to place an order.
- Dogfighting is illegal in 50 states, but some states still allow possession of fighting dogs and being a spectator at a dog fight! Make sense to you? We don't think so either. So write a letter to your local politician and tell her to do something to strengthen the law!
Have a free day?
- Volunteer at your local ASPCA, Humane Society or animal shelter. The kitties and pups will love you for it!
- Make your voice heard! The Human Society has tons of animal issues you can pick from. We understand some are more near and dear to you ... We ain't mad at ya! Just make your opinion known on the issues affecting animals!
- Join the Humane Society in getting the word out about dogfighting. They're using the airwaves to speak out against this bloodsport — and you can too. Just listen to and download one or more of the six broadcast-quality public service announcements and send the MP3 file(s) to the PSA director of your local radio station with a request that the station air this important message on animal cruelty.
Got a week?
- Hold a doggie and kitty food drive at your school. Be sure to get approval from both your school and the local animal shelter you plan on donating the food to.
- Hold an "Animal Movie Night" with family and friends. Choose a classic like "Lassie" or a funny film like "Beethoven." Then use the op to talk about how animals need to be treated with care and respect, even in show business.
- Have a bake sale and donate the funds to your local shelter. Be sure to include a minnie fact sheet with each cookie or brownie.
What if you have a month?
- Did you know that cruel animal testing is often used for simple items like candy bars? Mars (the makers of M&Ms and Twix) - is a known animal testing offender. So how about boycotting them and/or all animal tested food and beauty products? And recruit your friends to join in.
- Organize an awareness campaign. Lots of people don't know the specifics about their state's animal cruelty laws. Put 'em on! Or download a Cruelty Free Shopping Guide and hand them out around your school, church and/or community center.
- Rally your school against dissecting animals in science class. Plenty of people don't know about the alternatives to this practice or how to minimize the number of actual animals killed for dissecting purposes. Learning is important but so is being kind. So get your school in on the movement.
And if you've got a whole year...
- How about becoming a foster parent to a needy pet? Many no-kill shelters run out of room and need willing temporary homes. Look at the Pet Foster Network for places in your area.
- Start a club at your school to inform people about animal cruelty and what they can do. You can pick a specific mission (like helping homeless pets or fighting against fur) and/or organize monthly volunteer trips to a shelter. Post facts and tips around to educate the masses. And you can even take on the anti-dissection mission as a club. So go for it!
So now that you've seen all the options you have, go out and DO SOMETHING!
