a dog is not a luggage

dedicated to all the dogs who died and suffering from
owners/bus companies/shipping companies who are not
responsible enough in handling pets.

I was inspired to paint this when I read the post about a dog who died in a bus compartment:
http://maskedfruit.blogspot.com/2008/04/old-issuestill-many-people-dont-know.html
I was sadden by that story,we all know that this is not a new issue, still
there are no solution in these kind of case.

so far, there's no news about bus companies
having special place/spot for the dogs inside the bus...they don't allow pets inside.
kawawa naman ang mga hayop na nag su-suffer.

baking soda: as a pet care product?

Using Baking Soda on Pets
Baking soda is nontoxic and, therefore, safe for use around your dogs, cats, and other pets. It makes it easy to control odors and clean up accidents that are a natural part of having pets in the family. In this article, you will find many uses for baking soda on your pets: as a dry wash, to tend to bee stings, and to help maintain healthy teeth. Let's start with washing and cleanup.

Bathing: Give your dog a dry bath by sprinkling it with baking soda. Rub it in, then brush out the baking soda.

For a wet wash, combine 3 tablespoons baking soda with 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 teaspoon baby oil in a spray bottle. Spritz your pet, then wipe them dry.

Kitty litter: To eliminate odors from kitty litter boxes, sprinkle in 1/2 cup baking soda.

Make your own natural litter by mixing a small box of baking soda with 2 to 3 inches of dry, sandy clay.

Clean the kitty litter pan by removing the litter and pouring in 1/2 inch vinegar. Let it stand, then pour the material out, and let dry. Sprinkle baking soda over the bottom before adding fresh kitty litter.

Pet accidents: To clean up after a pet's "accident," scrub the area with club soda, and let the area dry. Then sprinkle the area with baking soda, and let it stand. Afterwards, vacuum the baking soda.

Healthy teeth and gums: You can brush your pet's teeth by dipping a damp, soft brush in baking soda and brushing gently.

Maintain your pet's dental hygiene by rinsing its mouth regularly with a solution of 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda in 1 cup warm water.

More Tips and Tricks

Pets run into a number of problems without even trying. Baking soda can bring some relief.

Skunks: If your pet has a run-in with a skunk, wash the pet in a bath containing 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon liquid soap. Rinse your pet well, and then dry them. Discard the unused cleaner.

Bee sting relief: After making sure the stinger is removed, cover a bee sting on your pet with a baking-soda paste.

Deodorize bedding: Sprinkle the bedding area with baking soda, let the baking soda stand, wait 15 minutes, and vacuum it up.

Toenail trimming tip: If you trim your pet's toenails yourself, you may accidentally draw blood by cutting too close. Dip the affected nail in baking soda, and then apply pressure to stop bleeding.

Other Critters

While baking soda can help dogs and cats, don't leave out the other animals in your house. Baking soda can help them, too.

Birdcage: Clean the bottom of your bird's cage by sprinkling baking soda on a damp sponge and scrubbing. Wipe the cage clean until it's dry.

Ferret cage deodorizer: To reduce odors in a ferret cage, sprinkle a layer of baking soda over the bottom of the cage after cleaning. Then cover with the appropriate bedding.

Saltwater aquarium maintenance: To maintain the proper pH level in your saltwater aquarium, mix 1 tablespoon baking soda in 1 cup dechlorinated water. Add this to the tank slowly, over a couple hours, to attain the appropriate pH level for your fish.

Clearly, you can use baking soda to take care of your pets in a variety of ways. Your animal friends will thank you.

kittens for adoption...

*paws' multiply
cute kittens..

A woman called the PAWS office to ask if she can bring some kittens she found to our shelter.

This woman has very kindly already adopted 8 of the cats she has rescued, and has 3 dogs too. She is also feeding a feral colony (yes, she TNR's :) ). Her resources already stretched, she cannot take in 4 more kittens.

Kittens as young as these don't usually thrive well in shelters, so we advised her to hang on to them a little bit longer so we can try re-homing them online first. We wish that the kittens would go directly from her home to adopters' homes.

Please help this woman (who has already helped so many animals) and these kittens by forwarding this to family or friends who might be interested in welcoming a kitten (or two) into their home.

If you are ready to take in a new furry family member, please consider adopting one of these little kittens!

Just leave a comment here and I will get you in touch with their rescuer, Anu Singh.

Thank you.

Sarah’s Famous Seven-Layer Dip

1 can vegetarian refried beans
1 pkg. Mexican-flavored ground meat substitute (try Yves veggie ground round)
1 cup salsa
2 cups shredded cheddar-flavored vegan cheese
1 cup guacamole
1 container vegan sour cream
1/4 cup chopped green onions
1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Spread the beans onto the bottom of a 9x3-inch serving tray that’s about 1 1/2 inches deep. Add a layer of vegetarian meat. Next drain the excess liquid from the salsa and spread over the vegetarian meat. Cover with half of the vegan cheese, then the guacamole, followed by the vegan sour cream. Top with the remaining ingredients. Serve immediately or refrigerate if you prefer it chilled.

Add the drained kidney beans and salsa, then cover and simmer for about 20 minutes, until the beans are soft, then mash with a fork or a potato masher. 1/4 cup peanut butter, chunky or smooth
2 Tbsp. soy sauce
3 Tbsp. vinegar
1 Tbsp. sesame oil
Sugar, to taste
Veggies of your choice, optional

Vinegar-free pickle relish, to taste (optional)

auntie annes:vegan?

Chances are great that your mall has a Johnny Rockets, Ruby Tuesday, Chili’s, or Bennigan’s somewhere on the premises, so you can always pop in there to grab a bite—even if it sometimes means having to trek across the parking lot. Some of you may even be lucky enough to have a Subway, Arby’s, or Baskin-Robbins inside the mall, and that makes it even easier to run in and get at least a little something to munch on to tide you over. If not, we can pretty much guarantee that you can grab a vegan snack at one of the places in the food court.

The butter on movie theater popcorn is generally vegan, as it's simply oil with no dairy juices. Simply open your mouth and ask what the butter is made from: cows or plants … and enjoy if it's the latter!

Auntie Anne's is hot! Except for the Sour Cream & Onion Pretzel and the Parmesan Herb Pretzel, her pretzels are animal-free—just ask for "no butter." Wanna take a dip? Stick with plain mustard or marinara sauce.

Pretzel Time pretzels are totally vegan, too. Just say, "Hold the slime" (the butter they brush on), and you'll get the freshest, hottest order—worth the wait.

And remember, several of the aforementioned restaurants (listed in "Fast & Cheap" and "Move for a Booth") probably occupy your food court. You won't ever wisp away at the mall. Vegan food is there.

Ehrlicia on man:human granulocytic ehrlicjiosis

Human granulocytic ehrlichiosis

Human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) (also called Human granulocytic anaplasmosis, or HGA[1][2] ) is an infectious disease caused by several types of bacteria that are typically transmitted to humans by Ixodes scapularis, also known as the deer tick or black-legged tick. This is the same tick that can transmit Lyme disease and Babesiosis.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include fever, severe headache, muscle aches, chills and shaking, similar to the symptoms of influenza.

The condition causes symptoms of fever, headache, and myalgia, with GI symptoms occurring in less than half of the patients and a skin rash in less than 10% of patients. It is also characterized by thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and elevated serum transaminase levels in the majority of infected patients. The causative bacterium is transmitted to humans via ticks.[3]

HGE is clinically indistinguishable from infection caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis, but molecular techniques can distinguish these incidents from HGE .

Treatment

Early treatment with antibiotics is often successful.

Doxycycline and rifampin have been used.[4]

Presentation during early pregnancy can complicate treatment.[5]

Terminology

HGE can be caused by several infectious agents, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum [6] (formerly known as Ehrlichia phagocytophila), Ehrlichia equi, and Ehrlichia ewingii [6].

When the agent is known to be from the Anaplasma genus, the term "human granulocytic anaplasmosis" (HGA) is often used. However, the ehrlichioses have similar presentations, and the genus and species are not always known. The genus Anaplasma and the genus Ehrlichia are both in the family Ehrlichiaceae, and HGE can be used to avoid the ambiguity.

Ehrlicia: acute inflamatory invaders (among dogs) part 2 ;diagnosis and treatment

HOW THE DIAGNOSIS IS MADE

Diagnosis does not rest on a single test but instead on a collection of results. The first step is to find a constellation of typical findings:

  • A dog with fever, enlarged lymph nodes, bleeding, or arthritis in multiple joints.
  • Low platelet numbers, high globulin levels, and mild anemia on blood testing.

When Ehrlichia are suspected, a blood test for antibodies against Ehrlichia organisms can be ordered. A positive test indicates that the dog has been exposed to Ehrlichia and does not imply active current infection necessarily. A negative titer does not fully rule out Ehrlichia, either, as a very sick patient will be too sick to produce antibodies and an early case may not yet have started to produce antibodies. The antibody level or “titer” can be done with an IFA (immunofluorescent antibody) or by ELISA (Enzyme-linked Immunosorbant assay). The IFA test is the traditional test. The ELISA test is included in a new in-house test kit from IDEXX labs (the “snap 3DX” test) that also includes a Lyme Disease test and a Heartworm test. The 3DX test is geared specifically to detect antibodies against Ehrlichia canis. It is not entirely clear if antibodies against other types of Ehrlichia will be similar enough to be detected by either the IFA or ELISA tests reliably. It takes 6-9 months after infection for titers to begin to drop.

Recently PCR testing for the actual presence of Ehrlichia organisms has become available. The disadvantage of this test is that it gives either a positive or negative results rather than an actual quantitative number that can be tracked. A combination of PCR testing as well as antibody titers are currently recommended by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. PCR testing remains positive for several weeks after infection as PCR testing does not distinguish between live and dead organisms. It takes time to clear dead organisms from the body.

If one is lucky one will actually see the organisms on a blood smear, and this, of course, clinches the diagnosis.

TREATMENT

Despite being one of the oldest antibiotics in use, tetracycline is probably the most effective against Ehrlichia (and any other intracellular blood parasite for that matter). Doxycycline, a more modern derivative, has a more convenient dosing schedule and has become more popular. Expect at least a month of treatment to be needed. Response is initially rapid (improvement is notable in the first few days).

If immune-mediated secondary reactions to the Ehrlichia are a problem (such as immune-mediated arthritis, or immune-mediated platelet loss) corticosteroids such as prednisone can be used to palliate the situation while the antibiotics are starting to work.

After infection, it is possible to become re-infected; immunity is not lasting after a previous infection.
--------------------------------------------------------------~oOo~------------------------------------------------------------

Ehrlicia: acute inflamatory invaders (among dogs) part 1

WHAT ARE EHRLICHIA?

Ehrlichia, named for the Dr. Ehrlich who first described them, are a special type of bacteria which infect and live within the white blood cells of their hosts. Different types of Ehrlichia live in different types of white blood cells. Hosts can be human, pet, or wild animals. They are spread from host to host by tick bites and their intracellular location makes them difficult to remove as most antibiotics do not penetrate to the inside of cells.

THE CRAZY EHRLICHIA NAME GAME

Ehrlichia were originally grouped according to the type of white blood cell they attacked. The granulocytic line of white bood cells, used by the body in attacking more acute inflammatory invaders, has a very lobulated nucleus and characteristic blood cell appearance. The monocytic line, used by the body for chronic forms of inflammation, has a more rounded nucleus. By finding Ehrlichia inside certain types of white blood cells, one could get a better idea for which type of Ehrlichia one was seeing. Or so we foolishly thought.

Ehrlichia in a granulcytic cell

Ehrlichia in a monocytic cell

  • Ehrlichia equi – lives in what are called “granulocytes” ( a type of white cell)
  • Ehrlichia ewingii – lives in granulocytes as well
  • Ehrlichia canis – lives in what are called “monocytes” (a different type of white blood cell)
  • Ehrlichia risitci (agent of Potomac Fever of horses) – also lives in monocytes.
  • Ehrlichia platys – lives in platelets (blood clotting cells)

With the advent of more specific molecular biology it was found that the rules above are not absolute. Today, RNA sequencing is used to identify the Ehrlichia at hand. In fact, some of the organisms previously believed to be Ehrlichia have been completely reclassified into other groups. We mention this as older terminology dies hard and many people still use the older names of organisms. Here is a current list of the organisms currently classified as Ehrlichia:

  • Ehrlichia canis (mostly a dog infection)
  • Ehrlichia ewingii (mostly a dog infection)
  • Ehrlichia chaffeensis (mostly a human infection)
  • Ehrlichia ruminantium

(Ehrlichia ristici is now reclassified as Neorickettsia ristici, and Ehrlichia platys is not reclassified as Anaplasma platys. Ehrlichia equi, Ehrlichia phagocytophila, and Human Granulocytic Ehrlichial Agent have been deemed to all be the same species and have been reclassified as Anaplasma phagocytophila).

"people can get infected by ehrlichia"

WHAT IS "TROPICAL PANCYTOPENIA?"

Although it was known that dogs could be infected with Ehrlichia, the scope of the illness created became evident during the Viet Nam war as the military German Shepherd Dogs became ill with an infection that seemed to wipe out their blood cells. White blood cells as well as red blood cells were affected and the disease was named “Tropical Canine Pancytopenia.” This condition was studied and found not to be limited to Southeast Asia but was in fact present in the good old U.S.A. as well. In the 1980’s it became clear that people could be infected by Ehrlichia and research intensified.

German Shepherd Dogs are said to get a particularly severe form of Ehrlichia infection.

WHAT TICKS ARE INVOLVED WITH EHRLICHIA?

Different Ehrlichia species are spread by different types of tick. (What ticks are located where limits what types of Ehrlichia infections are seen regionally.

The Brown Dog Tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) usually spreads Ehrlichia canis, Ehrlichia ewingii, and other diseases.

The Brown Dog Tick

The Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum) is the main vector of Ehrlichia ewingii. (Note the “star” on the tick’s main body.)

The Lone Star Tick

It is important to note, where there are ticks there are many tick-borne diseases: Lyme Disease, Babesia infection, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and probably some agents we do not even know of yet. It is not surprising for a given patient living in a tick area to be infected with multiple blood parasites.

WHEN DOGS GET SICK

There are three phases of illness with Ehrlichiosis: acute, subclinical, and chronic.

ACUTE PHASE: This is generally a very mild phase and occurs 1-3 weeks after the host is bitten by the tick. The Ehrlichia organism is replicated in this time period and attaching to white blood cell membranes. During this time the platelet count will drop and an immune-mediated platelet destruction will occur. The dog will be listless, off food, and may have enlarged lymph nodes. There may be fever as well but rarely does this phase kill a dog. Most clear the organism on their own but some will go on to the next phase.

SUBCLINICAL PHASE: In this phase, the dog appears normal. The organism has sequestered in the spleen and is essentially hiding out there. Dogs can stay in this phase for months or even years. The only hint that Ehrlichia is hiding is a somewhat reduced platelet count and/or elevated globulin level on a blood test. Blood protein is divided into Albumin (an important carrier protein) and Globulins (every other blood protein including antibodies.) Long term stimulation of the immune system will elevate globulins.

CHRONIC PHASE: In this phase the dog gets sick again. Up to 60% of dogs infected with Ehrlichia canis will have abnormal bleeding due to reduced platelets numbers. Deep inflammation in the eyes called “uveitis” may occur as a result of the long term immune stimulation. Neurologic effects may also be seen. Glomeruloneprhitis, resulting in serious urinary protein loss, can also result. Increased globulin levels are almost always seen in this stage, albumin is often low. Most dogs in the U.S. do not show the full “pancytopenia” (literally reduction in all blood cell lines).

Infections with Ehrlichia ewingii tend to produce arthritis in addition
to the above scenario.

Dogs are really man's best friend..until the end.

a sad but touching story of a dog and a man he considered friend. :')

Devoted dog stayed by her master's body
German shepherd guarded remains for up to six weeks after man committed suicide in Colorado
Associated Press
GREELEY, COLO.–A dog stood guard over her owner's body for up to six weeks after the man committed suicide on the remote northeastern Colorado plains, authorities said.
The body of 25-year-old Jake Baysinger of La Salle was found Sunday on the Pawnee National Grasslands about 120 kilometres northeast of Denver.
Cash, his German shepherd, was found beside him, thin and dehydrated but still alive. The dog had apparently survived by eating mice and rabbits, authorities said.
The Weld County coroner ruled Baysinger's death a suicide.
The cause of death wasn't immediately determined but authorities found a gun nearby, the coroner's office said yesterday.
"At least we know it's over now," said Baysinger's wife, Sara.
"We'd been looking for my husband for six weeks, and this isn't how we wanted it to end. At least we can close this.''
Baysinger was reported missing June 28.
An extensive search failed to locate him, but Kip Konig, a rancher, saw the dog last weekend, went to investigate and discovered Baysinger's body and his pickup.
He said Cash kept running back to the pickup and jumping into the front seat. "I got the sense she was trying to tell me where her master was," Konig said.
Cash was reunited Monday with Sara Baysinger and her 2-year-old son, Lane. She said her little boy is "very close to that dog'' and happy to see her again.
Investigators said the dog probably kept coyotes away from the body.

Vegetarian recipes...PART 2

VEGETARIAN

LASAGNA

Four Preparations:

  1. Lasagna flat noodles
  2. Giniling sauce
  3. Cream sauce
  4. Grated Cheese

I. Lasagna Flat Noodles

  1. Buy a box of lasagna flat noodles (Cost – P90 to P106)
  2. In a wide low cooking pan, cook 2 to 4 noodles at a time in water, a little oil & salt. Make sure the noodles are perpendicular over each other. Watch over the noodles as they cook to avoid sticking. Separate with spatula when the noodles seem to be sticking to each other. Add water as you cook so the noodles have enough space to cook & not stick to each other.
  3. For a standard pyrex dish, you will need 15 flat noodles.
  4. When cooked, put the noodles directly in room-temperature water (fill a large Tupperware) to cool & to avoid sticking to each other.
  5. These noodles can be stored at room temperature until the next morning if cooked the night before.

II. Giniling Sauce

  1. Use veggie burger (1 big can, P66 each)
  2. In a big casserole, pour about 1/3 cup cooking oil. When heated, put in the veggie burger.
  3. Timpla: tomato paste, toyo, sugar. Secret of this timpla: add a little at a time of each ingredient until you get the desired taste. Keep tasting after each addition. End result: a little on the sweet side, just a little. Sweet should not dominate. Just a hint of it. Still can taste the tomato paste & toyo. Add about ½ to 1 cup water so it doesn’t dry out as you cook. Don’t add too much at first, just add water as needed, when the giniling looks dry already.
  4. Allow the giniling to cook till quite tostado, till brown or slightly burned (just slightly). This will give a smoked flavor to the end result.
  5. When the fire is turned off, add about ¼ cup of raw olive oil for flavor.
  6. Put aside.

III. Cream Sauce

  1. Use 2 brik packs of all purpose cream & 2 (or 1) tall cans of button mushrooms (or raw oyster mushrooms)
  2. In a small casserole, heat a little cooking oil. Saute sliced mushrooms until quite tostado.
  3. Pour in both packs of all purpose cream & a thick slice of butter. Season with dried oregano, basil & Italian seasoning, any or all of the 3. Season with salt & a little pepper.
  4. End timpla: slightly on the salty side. Add salt a little at a time & taste after each addition to make sure you didn’t put too much. End result should be slightly salty but not too salty.
  5. After turning the flame off, add about 2 tablespoons of raw olive oil.
  6. Put aside.

IV. Grated Cheese

  1. Grate 2 blocks of small size cheese.
  2. Separate each block into a plate. You will end up with 2 plates of grated cheese, equivalent of 1 block on each plate.

Put Them Together:

  1. In a clean pyrex, pour 2 tablespoons of olive oil on the bottom. Spread out evenly across the whole surface with your fingers.
  2. Place one layer of lasagna noodles to cover the whole bottom surface. Noodles can overlap each other by ½ inch. If too long or wide, cut out the extra extensions with a clean pair of scissors.
  3. Pour on top of this layer – ½ of the giniling sauce you cooked. Spread evenly.
  4. Spread another layer of flat noodles on top of the giniling.
  5. Place half of the cooked cream sauce evenly on top of this noodle layer.
  6. Spread a layer of flat noodles on top of the cream sauce.
  7. Spread evenly – 1 plate of the grated cheese.
  8. Layer of noodles
  9. Evenly spread the remaining giniling over this layer.
  10. Spread out the remaining flat noodles across this surface. Evenly spread out the remaining cut-out extensions of noodles.
  11. Pour out the remaining cream sauce on top of this layer. Spread the mushrooms evenly across the surface.
  12. Spread out the remaining plate of grated cheese across the cream sauce layer.
  13. Bake in an oven only until the cheese melts or browns a little.

-- END --
